After your Lasik consultation, expectations about using contact lenses may change. Most patients no longer need them, but your doctor will advise when it’s safe to resume wearing them. It’s important to follow post-surgery guidelines carefully to ensure a successful recovery.
With this step-by-step guide for contact lens placement, you’ll be a contact pro before you know it.
With this step-by-step guide for contact lens placement, you’ll be a contact pro before you know it.
Firstly, wash your hands with soap and water. This is essential to any contact lens application technique, as it rids your hands of any bacteria or debris. This helps you avoid infections and keep your eyes healthy. Avoid washing your hands with extra oils or fragrances, as these can stick to the lens’ surface.
When your hands are clean, dry them. This is just as important as washing them properly. You must use a lint-free cloth. Otherwise, the lint can transfer from your hands to your contacts.
With your hands prepped, take one lens from its storage case. Pick it up gently, then slide it onto your dominant index or middle finger. While it may feel easier to use your nails, use your fingertips instead. Using your nails can damage the lens, rendering it unusable.
Use your contact solution to rinse the lens. Ensuring the lens is clean is a vital component of eye hygiene for contact wearers. If you drop the lens, rinse it again.
Once it’s clean, assess the lens for any torn or damaged spots. If you notice any, get a new lens. Also, ensure the contact isn’t inside-out. The lens should look like a bowl with the edges turned up. If the edges are turned out, reverse the lens.
When the contact is ready, use your non-dominant hand to lift your upper eyelid. Looking in the mirror, use the middle or ring finger of your dominant hand to pull down your lower eyelid.
Gently place the lens on your eye. After inserting contact lenses properly, let your eyes close. Look around in a circular motion to allow the lens to settle, then open your eyes and blink.
When you insert the lens properly, you shouldn’t be able to feel it. If your vision is blurry or the lens is uncomfortable, take the lens out. Then, try reinserting the lens. It may help to rinse it again or re-wash your hands.
